Spotting The Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly dangerous, invisible, and odourless gas that can be produced when gas appliances, boilers, fires, or solid fuel burners do not burn fuel properly. Breathing it in can cause serious health issues or even be fatal.
Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
CO poisoning can feel like common illnesses such as flu or food poisoning, making it easy to miss. Common symptoms include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Confusion
- Loss of consciousness
If you experience these symptoms and feel better when you leave the house, it could be a sign of carbon monoxide poisoning.
What to Do If You Suspect Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning or a leak, act immediately:
· Switch off gas appliances and leave the house.
· Get fresh air by opening all doors and windows.
· Call the National Gas Emergency Service helpline on 0800 111 999 (mainland GB) or 0800 002 001 (Northern Ireland).
· Seek medical advice if you feel unwell—call 111 or visit A&E in an emergency.
How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
CO alarms – These alarms detect carbon monoxide and give an early warning. To ensure your CO alarm is functioning properly, it's important to test it regularly. Press the test button on the alarm until you hear the sound. If the alarm doesn't sound, replace the batteries or the alarm itself. Regular testing helps ensure that the alarm will provide an early warning in case of carbon monoxide presence, keeping you and your household safe
Look out for warning signs – Black stains around appliances, pilot lights that frequently go out, or yellow/orange flames instead of blue could indicate a problem.
Stay safe and protect your home from carbon monoxide risks!
