Insulation:
How smarter fabric measures create warmer, more efficient homes and buildings
The power of insulation in modern homes and buildings
Improving energy efficiency in homes and public buildings isn’t just about replacing boilers or installing solar panels - it starts with getting the basics right. And that means insulation.
For housing providers, local authorities, and organisations managing public estates, insulation remains one of the most cost-effective and impactful ways to reduce carbon emissions, cut bills, and create warmer, healthier environments. As the UK works towards Net Zero and tighter building performance standards, fabric-first solutions have never been more relevant.
With energy prices continuing to fluctuate and government decarbonisation targets fast approaching, insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to create immediate impact - for people, buildings, and budgets. Social housing providers are encouraged to access funding to insulate their homes through the Warm Homes Social Housing Fund Wave 3.
At Sureserve, we deliver a full range of trusted insulation services — from cavity wall extraction and refill, to roof insulation and external wall systems and draught proofing — all designed to meet the specific needs of both individual homes and residents, and large-scale property portfolios. These services form the foundation of our wider decarbonisation offer, supporting retrofit projects, regulatory compliance, and long-term energy performance, helping clients deliver healthier homes and more energy-efficient buildings.
What is insulation?
Insulation refers to the process of reducing heat transfer between the inside and outside of a building through adding materials to reduce heat loss. By improving insulation, buildings can maintain a more consistent internal temperature, reducing the need for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.
Why does insulation matter?
According to Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, more than 3.17 million households in England live in fuel poverty. Poor insulation means not just higher energy bills, but real discomfort — cold bedrooms, draughty living spaces, and tough choices between heating and other essentials. Insulation doesn’t just save energy; it protects wellbeing.
Even the most advanced heating system can only perform at its best if the building is able to retain heat. In thousands of UK homes, especially those built before modern energy standards, a lack of effective insulation leads to rapid heat loss and high running costs.
Well-installed insulation helps regulate indoor temperatures, reduces the pressure on heating systems, and makes living spaces more comfortable all year round. It’s not just about energy efficiency. It’s about comfort, affordability and doing right by residents. Insulation is also a key factor in addressing fuel poverty - helping households stay warm without pushing them into financial hardship.
Sureserve’s insulation services
We provide a full range of insulation services, tailored to suit each property type, condition and energy goal. All our work is delivered to high standards and aligned with PAS 2035 principles.
Cavity wall extraction
Over time, cavity wall insulation can become damp and underperform, or it may have been poorly fitted from the outset. We remove old or ineffective material and replace it with modern, more efficient insulation. This process helps to eliminate gaps and voids that cause heat loss and restores the cavity’s ability to keep the building warm and dry.
Roof insulation
A significant amount of heat escapes through the roof of an uninsulated building. Installing insulation in the loft or attic is one of the most effective ways to retain warmth and reduce heating costs. Loft insulation creates a barrier that keeps heat inside during colder months and improves comfort throughout the year.
Internal and external wall insulation
For solid walled buildings without cavities or those needing extra thermal protection, we install insulation on either the inside or outside of external walls. Internal wall insulation improves thermal efficiency without affecting the exterior, while external insulation also adds weather protection and can enhance the building’s appearance.
Draught proofing
Even small gaps around windows, doors and pipework can let warm air escape and cold air in. Draught proofing involves sealing these areas to reduce unwanted air movement. It’s a straightforward upgrade that can make a noticeable difference in comfort and energy use, especially when combined with other insulation measures.
How do you choose the right insulation materials?
Every building is different — and so is the best way to insulate it. That’s why we use a range of trusted, PAS 2035-compliant materials tailored to each property type and performance requirement.
A smarter path to net zero
For housing providers and local authorities, insulation is one of the most practical ways to reduce carbon, cut costs, and meet regulatory targets. It supports EPC compliance, prepares homes for future technologies, and delivers warmer, healthier spaces for residents.
