Apprentices Shine in Barnet and Southgate College Training Centre Refurbishment

Apprentices showcase their skills

Barnet and Southgate College recently had the pleasure of welcoming second-year Gas Apprentices from Sureserve Compliance to participate in a significant refurbishment project at their training centre in Colindale. This initiative provided an invaluable opportunity for the apprentices to gain hands-on experience and enhance their practical skills, all while contributing to their gas engineering portfolios. The project involved installing new boilers, cookers, and associated pipework and controls, bringing the apprentices closer to achieving their Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering.

Practical Skills Development

Manjit Bansal, an assessor trainer at the college, praised the apprentices' dedication and growth throughout the project. "It has been an ideal opportunity for Aleks, Ryan, and Lauren to develop their planning skills for gas runs and boiler installations, including measuring and cutting pipework to minimise waste and practicing their soldering skills. All three have had to use their problem-solving skills throughout the project and have independently resolved any issues. Throughout the installation, all three have ensured that they have followed the manufacturer’s instructions from installation through to commissioning.”

Individual Achievements

Aleks was tasked with fitting a heat-only boiler, including pipework for both hot and cold water, gas, and associated electrical work. He continued with piping up to the radiator, the indirect cylinder, and loft tanks. Reflecting on his experience, Aleks commented, "It has been a challenging but rewarding experience. It has been good to have the experience in the centre. I've gained more confidence and knowledge in the installation process."

Ryan and Lauren were both assigned to install combi boilers with all associated pipework and electrics, connecting them to the radiators. Ryan remarked, "It has been a good learning process. I've planned out the gas run and associated hot and cold runs, installed the boiler with MagnaClean, shock arrester, and a scale reducer, and connected it to the radiators. I've encountered a few problems along the way, so it has been beneficial to have the college as a place to learn and ask questions."

Lauren added, "It was a good experience and good to learn more overall."

A Collaborative Effort

The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative efforts between Barnet and Southgate College and Sureserve Compliance. The apprentices not only gained practical experience but also developed essential skills that will serve them well in their future careers. The college provided a supportive environment where the apprentices could learn, ask questions, and overcome challenges, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of the gas engineering industry.

This project highlights the importance of practical training and real-world experience in vocational education, preparing students for successful careers in their chosen fields.

Looking Ahead

As the apprentices continue their journey towards achieving their Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering, the experience gained from this project will undoubtedly be a cornerstone of their professional development. The skills and confidence they have acquired will not only benefit them in their assessments but also in their future roles as qualified gas engineers.

In conclusion, the training centre refurbishment project has been a resounding success, providing the apprentices with a platform to showcase their skills, learn from real-world challenges, and prepare for their future careers in gas engineering.
